The University of Maryland is competing in the second Solar Decathlon competition organized by the U.S Department of Energy (DOE). For two weeks in Fall 2005, 18 schools will create a bustling community of energy efficient, completely solar-powered homes on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The Solar Decathlon consists of ten contests that encompass all the ways in which we use energy in our daily lives. Only the solar radiation captured by each home will be used to generate thermal, electrical, and mechanical power. Each solar home will contain all the amenities of a typical home including electricity, hot water, and coniditioned living space.
The winner of the Solar Decathlon will be the team that best blends aesthetics and modern conveniences with maximum energy production and optimal efficiency.
