University of Maryland 2005 Solar Decatholon

September, 2005

The radiant floor is warmed by water that circulates through plastic tubes embedded in the floor slab. The team placed the tubing to cover the entire floor with a specified minimum spacing. Each room has a separate circuit of tubing; the circuits begin and end in the utility room, where they will be connected to the hot water tank.

Next, the gypcrete will be poured and the organic patterns of the tubes will be hidden. Their presence, however, will be evident in year-round thermal comfort.
