At the heart of the 2005 Maryland solar house are two glue laminated wood beams. After ordering these beams several weeks ago, they arrived on Wednesday, June 15.
Each glulam beam is 12 inches tall, 5.5 inches wide, and 50 feet long. They weigh 1200 pounds each. The beams arrived on a trailer from North Carolina, and Construction Superintendent Mike Boteler expertly moved them from the truck to the job site.
"This marks the start of some serious construction for us," said Boteler. "Now that we have these beams, the real fun begins."
The next step for the Maryland team is to attach these glulams to the concrete footings via posts, and to start installing the floor joists.
