Charge Controller

Charge ControllerThe charge controller monitors the electricity coming into the house from the PV panels and appropriately charges the batteries. This is necessary to prevent over-charging or under-charging the batteries, which can shorten battery life.

The charge controller is attached to battery sensors that measure voltage and temperature. The charge controller monitors these sensors and makes adjustments. It has no moving parts, and thus, requires no maintenance.

The 2005 Maryland Solar Decathlon house will feature 3 OutBack Power Systems MX60 charge controllers. Each MX60 is rated for 60 amps of DC output current and can be used with battery systems ranging from 12 to 60 volts.
